Making 3D Models and Art
Exploring the World of 3D Model Making and Rendering
If you’re a digital artist on a budget, wanting to get more from your software and models, keep reading. I use Blender (free) and DAZ Studio (free) as my tools, alongside GIMP and Inkscape (yes, both free). When starting out I also used Hexagon ($20, often less) and know of many 3D vendors who wouldn’t be without it. Since going pro, I have added other paid-for/subscription software, but never underestimate what you can do legitimately at no-cost or low-cost.
While I enjoy creating content, I’m still a buyer too and know how great it is to get a bargain. While my focus is now on making models, if you want to see historic sale data and get a feel for discounts and sale events on a major 3D marketplace, the older posts will be an interesting read.
In my previous post I gave a quick run-down of the (non-technical) evolution of the Genesis line of 3D humans, as created and sold by Daz3D. These figures are models of humans, complete with photorealistic or toon skin materials, and fully rigged to pose in natural ways.
So, in my last post I explained the generation naming and numbering. At time of writing, we are somewhere near the middle (just a guess) of the production span of Genesis 3, which is the line of figures with a 7 after their names. This post was originally published after the release of Kalea 7 and a day before the launch of Kimo 7, but I’ve updated now for Rune and will add in other new figures as they release.
As a Daz vendor, I’m not able to give out any information that is not public knowledge, so I will only be mentioning released figures here.

A long, long time ago I created an infographic style guide as a Who’s Who of the DAZ 3D Genesis figures. It was first created some time after Daz made the switch from generation 4 (Victoria 4, Michael 4, etc.) to the unisex Genesis base. Genesis was the mesh on which all generation 5 figures were built.
Times change. Oh how they change! A few years on and we are another two generations further on, and seeing an ever-more rapid roll out of new figures. If I was confused as a new buyer and user of 3D human models from Daz, I can only imagine how befuddled any newcomers to this field feel these days.
To help you out, let’s get a few facts straight, starting with the most recent figures. I’m keeping it simple so this is a simple overview rather that a discussion of mesh or rigging changes.
This is the 7th … Continue reading
I’m excited to share that I have my second product of 2016 releasing soon, as part of the 2016 March Madness sale event at Daz 3D. My earlier 3Delight and Iray knit shader pack squeaked into the new year on New Year’s Day and has been popular, so I’m glad people are finding it useful.
My newest product took me back to something I love doing: environments. Get ready for a new multi-part interior with lots of possibilities and an interesting drama theme.
It was fun to get back to creating rooms and props. Unfortunately it’s also now an over-subscribed genre at Daz, but I think that’s true of most categories there now. As someone who enjoys creating for this market too much to be swept aside, I can only continue to search for new ideas and present them in my own way.
I mention this because I know some readers have wondered about … Continue reading
For the 3D enthusiasts among my readers, here’s a quick reminder to pick up those fantastic free gifts that PAs have been sharing at Daz3D this month. Most, it must be said, are courtesy of InaneGlory and will give you some great Iray presets for Genesis 2 (generation 6) Daz Original characters. I stopped by the site today and found a whole bunch of them (Lilith 6, Giselle 6, Gianni 6, Girl 6), though the more frequent visitors among you may have picked up one or two yesterday.
There were also some very nice looking lights from the FWSA team. Can’t wait to try those soft light probes and the new Iray skin presets out.
Things have been quiet around here this December while I’ve been working on other projects. However, I hope you’ve grabbed some of those exciting new products over at Daz and your other favourite 3D marketplaces. Remember to open daily newsletters for all … Continue reading
Some of you already know the artist and Daz enthusiast who goes by the name of ‘Spit’. If you don’t, I believe she has started a new Art Studio thread in the Daz3d forums, so go along and enjoy the lovely whimsical art she will be sharing there.
She was kind enough to share an image with me that featured my new Chunky Knit Sweater Outfit and in the background the Humble Homestead and its hill environment. The finished piece had such a charming storybook look that I couldn’t resist adding a frame and uploading it here.
I too own the Daz Horse 2 but have done very little with it. While it’s a lovely model, it’s not the easiest to work with and create something convincing from… well not … Continue reading
If you live in a colder part of the world, I hope you’re keeping warm this winter. We have stormy weather here but I’m warm and fuzzy today thanks to the newsletter feature from the marketing team at Daz.
I know I’ve made the odd comment about newer or less well-known PAs not getting so much exposure, although I’m aware it’s not personal and simply about the day’s theme and grabbing the attention of customers. Just the same I’m thrilled that a product release of mine hit the right note for the team’s daily theme, and think they did an amazing job with the magazine-cover style newsletter. So thank you everyone in Marketing, I know you have a lot to deal with in more ways than one, and can’t please us all, but once in a while you make someone’s day — today you made mine!
Anyhow, what all this means is that I have a new … Continue reading
If you’ve been following the Daz3D sales, you’ll know that Thursday (Thanksgiving for many) had some nice discounts on DAZ Originals, while yesterday saw a select number of PA stores go on sale at 55% off. These were of course the big stores or top-selling artists who, as some customers noticed, are frequently on sale. If you too have noticed the same names cropping up in these kinds of sales, it’s not down to the PAs, or at least not unless there’s some secret process I don’t know about. Top selling vendors simply get more promotion round the year.
What about everyone else? It pretty much comes down to the annual PA Sale, plus those rare store-wide sales. If you have a new release, your store also goes on sale. But that’s it. Which is why it’s exciting that there is one of those wonderful store-wide sales going on all weekend, only this time it is rolling … Continue reading
Sorry folks, I’ve been out of touch for a while. While all the excitement of the Platinum Club sale was going on, many of us PAs (vendors at Daz3d) were going all out to get content ready for Michael 7. I have an outfit all ready for him which I hope people will have fun with. I’d love to share more but it’s a bit too soon for teasers. It probably won’t make it into the store before the end of this month, but early December is a possibility. I’m also working on what I hope will be my next release after that.
Enough about me! Everyone now has access to the new Genesis 3 Male, aka Eddie, who I think is looking really good. Remember, you can get this guy for free. Look for him under Genesis 3 Male Starter Essentials in your DIM (download manager). You’ll get a useful set of 10 poses, hair, and Basic … Continue reading
Well, I had no particular plans to shout about the arrival of Arabella, the latest Daz3D figure release for Genesis 3 (generation 7). I don’t have anything tied-in with her release. As it happened, my last outfit (Ernestine Outfit for Genesis 3) was accidentally tied in with Josie, who is a beautiful character but just like with my Milonga shoes and Bethany, the outfit just happened to have a Josie fit and wasn’t otherwise specific to her.
So while I love her slender figure, the prospect a generation 7 Vampire-Goth didn’t have me all that excited. However, I think Daz and the PAs have outdone themselves on Arabella 7 and her bundles. I don’t know if you are a fan of the Gothic look but with Halloween just around the corner those outfits are going to appeal to a lot of 3D artists. There’s also plenty of choice.
Queen of Shadow is a lovely if … Continue reading
I don’t normally single out one-off (in this case, two-off!) items by individual vendors for special attention. But you know the moment I saw FWSA Indigo’s name that I would have to post. Fred and Sabby always make such appealing characters but I think Indigo and her companion, FWSA Jade, might just be the best they have done yet. The FWSA Indigo character is also a DAZ Original (sadly, Jade is not), so she is even more affordable. That means you can pick her at the Daz3D Store without denting your PC Sale budget too much, and hopefully have enough to spare for her sister too, who has the PC Sale 40% discount on new PA items.
FWSA Indigo is very pretty and feminine, with a beautiful skin tone. She was designed for Victoria 7. FWSA Jade is for Teen Josie 7 and has a wide-eyed ingenue look. Her compelling feature, other than those big soulful … Continue reading
